2) A Sleeping Giant
We have told a number of stories of Andre the Giant drinking copious amounts of alcohol that doesn’t even seem humanly possible. There had to have been times when he has taken his drinking a little to far right? Yes, there certainly has been.
In a Legends of Wrestling roundtable discussion, Pat Patterson told the legendary story of when Andre the Giant had a little too much to drink.
Pat Patterson:
“One time Andre was sooo out of it, we walked into the hotel lobby at 3:30 in the morning. He passed out in front of the coffee shop. Here is this big guy laying there DEAD”
Mike Graham pipes in:
“No, not a big guy, a GIANT laying there”
Patterson continued:
“We were trying to get him up and there was no way. So I took his wallet and his watch and we just left him there. There was nothing we could do. We went to bed. Woke up the next morning around 9, 10 o’clock. The manager says I got up at 6:00 for breakfast…. Hey, call Triple A, there is nothing we can do.
Imagine the horror of waking up to Andre the Giant passed out on your hotel floor? No chance you could move him without a forklift.
1) Why Andre Drank So Much
We have to end this story on a bit of a sad note. Over these accounts, we have told many impressive stories about Andre the Giant drinking a lot of booze. The saddest thing was, he wasn’t drinking for only the enjoyment but because of the pain that he was in.
Andre carried around a massive amount of weight being over 7 feet tall and more than 500 pounds. Also as a professional wrestler, his body would take constant punishment.
His co-star Cary Elwas from the Princess Bride revealed that Andre wasn’t an alcoholic but drank to ease the constant pain that his body was under. Here is what he said:
“Andre didn’t drink for the sake of drinking—Andre was in a lot of pain, God bless him. His back was injured from carrying all that weight around, and from having other wrestlers breaking chairs over his back. He was due to have an operation right after the shoot, and his doctor didn’t know what kind of pain medication to give him because of his size, so the only way that he could deal with the pain was to drink alcohol”
Sad when you think about it.
