2) The Story Of When Vince Stole Some Shoes
Dave Meltzer tells the hilarious story of Vince McMahon and Pat Patterson stealing Frank Deford and his wife’s shoes. Deford is a well-known sportswriter, and Vince was apparently angry at him for hiring Meltzer to write for him.
Vince, Pat and some other WWF executives were at a party with various other companies. In retaliation for hiring Meltzer, Vince decided to pull a prank on Deford while they were all bowling:
“Then McMahon and Pat Patterson stole one shoe from Deford as well as his wife while they had their bowling shoes on. Keep in mind these aren’t 20 year olds. Vince at this point is 45 or 46, Patterson is 50, Deford was 52. So when they’re done bowling, the Deford’s can’t find their shoes and McMahon and Patterson are laughing. So they figure okay, joke, where’s the shoe. But McMahon and Patterson never gave up the shoes and they actually had to leave the party with one shoe each. It’s one thing to do it to a guy, but then doing it to his wife?” (Source: Wrestling Observer).
Consequently, Deford wrote an article years later about the death of Chris Benoit and various other professional wrestlers. As a result, when the article was brought up in a court case, Vince asked for it to be dismissed because Deford held a grudge against him for stealing his shoes all of those years ago.
1) The Legendary Vince-Burrito Story
The story of Vince McMahon not knowing what a burrito was, even though he ate one for lunch every day. Former WWE Creative Team writer Dan Madigan tells the story that has become legendary in an interview with PWTorch’s Wade Keller. The plan was for a burrito to be used in a segment featuring the Big Show. Here is what Madigan said:
“I think they were going to poison Big Show and give him a spiked burrito. The whole concept was: ‘We’re going to spike his food, spike the burrito, you cut to a vignette before that showing him eating it, and then he passes out in the ring.’ So, Vince goes, ‘Burrito?! Who the hell knows what a burrito is?’ It was such a far concept. And everyone in the room goes, ‘Well, we know what a burrito is.’ And Vince goes, ‘Well, where the hell have I been?’
But, the funny thing is, Wade, every day at noon, Vince’s secretary would walk into the office – the writing room – with a burrito. It was a steak-wrap cut in half. And he would put ketchup on it. Every day, he was eating a burrito and not knowing what it was. But, that’s the idea – when you’re in a bubble and in a business where you’re ostracized from society, it’s you and them, that’s it. Everyone else is an outsider, so things like that do make sense in the confines of the wrestling world” (Source: PWTorch).
